Tanabata Festival Overview

Tanabata, also known as the Star Festival, is a Japanese festival that celebrates the meeting of the deities Orihime and Hikoboshi, represented by the stars Vega and Altair respectively. According to legend, these celestial lovers are separated by the Milky Way and are only allowed to meet once a year on the seventh day of the seventh lunar month. The festival's traditions include writing wishes on strips of paper and hanging them on bamboo branches, a practice that symbolizes the weaving of threads of destiny.

Activities and Learning

The students participated in various activities that included traditional Tanabata decorations, writing their own wishes on tanzaku strips, and learning about the festival's history and significance. The hands-on experience provided a unique insight into Japanese culture and the importance of festivals in society.

Acknowledgments

Special thanks are extended to Ms. Sonu from the Japan Foundation New Delhi (JFND) for her exceptional coordination and arrangement of the visit. The tour would not have been possible without the support and encouragement of Mr. D D Dahiya, the Director, and Mr. Narender Kumar, the Principal of Sunrise International School, who facilitated this enriching cultural experience for the students.

Conclusion

The visit to the Japan Foundation New Delhi for the Tanabata Festival was an enlightening experience for the students of Sunrise International School. It provided a platform for cultural exchange and understanding, fostering a sense of global citizenship and appreciation for cultural diversity. 'Experience Japan' remains committed to organizing such educational tours that contribute to the holistic development of students.

Thanks
